Now-a-days most of the people tend to have acne problems. Although, it’s a common part of puberty, but adults and preteens get it too. Presently, it’s so common that it has become the subject of much discussion and consequently many myths.
Before you take anybody’s advice related to acne, you need to know that there’s a lot of information about acne which are quite wrong. By clearing up some of the common misconceptions about acne, you can help yourself to get rid of it.
Here are few myths and the actual facts about acne.
- Myth 1# Acne should be popped.
Fact: Popping up acne is absolutely a wrong approach. Picking or popping them can cause germs to further penetrate your skin resulting in more redness, pain and at times infection. Keep in mind popped acnes can leave a scar on your skin.
- Myth 2 # Washing your face all the time helps you to reduce acne.
Fact: It’s a common belief that acne is caused by poor hygiene and dirt. This is simply a misconception. It’s good to wash your face everyday to get rid of dead skin cells, surface dirt, and excess oil but do not wash your face more than once or twice a day. If you wash too frequently you can dry and irritate your skin. That will cause more breakouts.
- Myth 3 # Eating fried foods or chocolate can cause acne.
Fact: This is one of the oldest myths. Extensive scientific studies have not found a single connection between diet and acne. In fact, chocolate, fried foods, pizza and other fast foods do not cause acne. However, to some extent, you need to avoid those foods which are not nutritious.
Rather, eating a variety of foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, will make you feel good and keep the rest of your body healthy and strong.
- Myth 4 # Being in the sun can cure acne.
Fact: It’s wrong. There is no such reason which can explain that exposure to sun can improve your acne. However, initially you can notice that, it’s getting well. But, actually, the sun tan helps in hiding the blemishes, never cures it.
- Myth 5 # Acne is only for teenagers.
Facts: This myth is not only false but harmful in several ways. This wrong idea can make you wait instead of seeking treatment for their acne. It’s apparently dangerous. The harsh reality is that acne can develop at any age. Though acne is not curable yet, but highly treatable. The course and duration of treatment differ dramatically for each person.
- Myth 6 # Don’t use make up for an acne prone skin.
Facts: Most make-ups today won’t clog your pores. Try to use cosmetic products which are oil-free or water-based and hypoallergenic (no added fragrance). Some cosmetics even contain acne-fighting ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. If you are not sure, ask your dermatologist.
- Myth 7# Just let acne run its course.
Facts: The truth is that acne can be cleared up. If the acne products you have tried haven’t worked, immediately consult a dermatologist. With the products available today, there is no reason why someone has to endure acne or get acne scars.
- Myth 8 # Acne is an infection and it’s contagious
Facts: Acne is a skin disorder caused by a combination of factors including hormones and genetics. It’s not an infection and can never be contagious.
- Myth 9 # Stress causes acne.
Fact: Actually, stress cannot cause acne but it can make acne worse and having acne can be very stressful.
- Myth 10 # You should stop your medication if your acne has disappeared.
Fact: Never stop you medication on your own until and unless your doctor asks you to do so. If you stop your medication too soon, or even if you change the dose, your acne might flare up again.
