Acne is not an exclusive skin condition for teenagers. It is also seen to be erupting in adulthood. Adult acne is often depressing as it seems to be more permanent than teenage acne. But adult acne also occurs due to almost the same reasons as teenage acne.
Adult acne is mostly found in women than in men. The reasons of this problem are, however, not much different from the factors causing teenage acne.
Following are the causes of adult acne:
- Hormonal activity is one of the main reasons for adult acne as well as teenage acne. The mail hormone androgen, which is pivotal in teenage acne, is also active in causing adult acne.
- Hormonal fluctuations generally trigger up during ovulation, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. It is quite common for women to find their acne suddenly triggering up during those periods.
- The P. acne bacteria, which triggers acne in teenagers, causes the problem in adults too. It inflames the clogged pores and causes papules, pustules and even severe nodules and cysts.
- Adult acne usually begins with blackheads. Though these are thought to be dirt, they are nothing but oil and dead cells getting trapped in a pore with bacteria. It then becomes black when exposed to air and take the shape of blackheads.
- Acne in adulthood also occurs due to stress. Stress causes the oil glands to over- compensate and they release oil which again gets mixed with hair follicles and clog in pores.
- Use of not-so-good cosmetics also causes the eruption of acne. Bad cosmetics results in bacteria laden pores, which is a necessary condition for acne to erupt.
- Birth control pills also cause the breakout of adult acne in adult woman. Hormones cause the sebaceous glands to overact and birth control pills with androgen in them trigger acne breakouts.
- Use of certain steroids and hormone therapies can also develop the problem of acne.
- Acne may also occur due to heredity. If any one of the parents has a history of suffering from acne, the child may have more chances to have the problem in his/her teens or adulthood.
Adult acne is very frustrating as it causes concern in people about their appearance. In teenage people might rest assured that the problem may wither away with the passing of time. But in adult age this consolation seems to lose its effect. However, you need not panic. The causes of adult acne are not very different from the causes of teenage acne and it can be prevented with natural and home remedies. There are medical treatments of acne also that one can try after consulting a doctor.
