Nodular acne is characterized by large hard bumps. Mild to moderate acne is present on the surface of the skin. Nodular acne forms underneath the skin. They are extremely painful and last for a longer period of time. If treatment is neglected, they may flare up at the same spot again. Nodular acne may also lead to severe scarring. Nodular acne must never be squeezed or rubbed as this causes the nodules to flare up.
Causes
Acne is primarily caused due to hormonal changes. Dead skin cells, bacteria and overproduction of sebum also causes acne. Nodular acne is caused when the hair follicles are blocked by sebum and dead skin cells in the deeper skin surface. It may also be caused by:
- Medications such as cortisone which causes hormonal imbalance
- Birth Control Pills
- Heredity
- Stress
- Harsh chemicals in soaps or lotions
- Greasy facial creams or lotions
Treatment
To treat nodular acne, aggressive therapy is needed.Topical creams are effective in treating mild to moderate forms of acne but are less effective in treating nodular acne. The following treatments are effective in treating nodular acne:
- Oral antibiotics to fight bacteria and reduce inflammation
- Hormonal treatment
- Accutane, also known as Isotretinoin is highly effective
- Cortisone injections
Self-treatment or self medication is not advisable for nodular acne as this may further worsen the condition. Any form of treatment must be closely monitored by a dermatologist to reduce the side-effects.
Scarring Due To Nodular Acne
Laser therapy or surgery is mostly recommended by doctors to treat scars. Dermabrasion may also be done along with laser treatment to get the best results. In case of deep, severe scarring, fat transfer is done to minimize the appearance.
Treatment for nodular acne usually takes a long time. Be patient, exercise regularly, have a healthy diet and follow all the instructions given by your doctor.
