Laser resurfacing is a popular treatment for acne scars. In this treatment, beams of laser are focused on the specific areas of the skin. The laser burns away the top layer of the skin; over time the skin heals, replacing the scarred areas with newer and scar-free skin. This procedure usually takes about an hour.
How is Laser Resurfacing Done?
Laser resurfacing for acne scar treatment is done in the following way:
- Local anesthesia is given to numb the areas to be treated
- Continuous beams of light are focused on the scarred areas of the skin.
- The treatment may include CO2 laser and/or Erbium laser. The session may take up to 1 hour
- After the treatment, a sterile dressing is applied to the area
- An ointment may be applied over the area to avoid scabbing
After care of Laser Resurfacing for Acne Scars
Immediately after the treatment, there can be redness, swelling and itchiness. After 5 to 7 days, the skin peels and may have a pink or red color. The redness may continue for several months. During this time, the skin repairs itself, replacing the scar tissue with fresh and smooth skin. After care of laser resurfacing may include:
- Treating the skin with saline solution, 2 to 5 times a day
- Using a sunscreen of SPF more than 15 to protect your skin from sun’s harmful rays
- Using moisturizer regularly
Side-effects of this treatment may include hypo-pigmentation or hyper-pigmentation. White spots may also occur. Overall, the treatment feels like a mild sunburn.
