Tea tree oil is derived from the steam distillation of the leaves of the plant Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia. Tea tree oil contains anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, and it can help in clearing acne. However, tea tree oil should be used only in its dilute form for treating acne.
There are also a number of acne products such as creams, gels, lotions which contain tea tree oil. In rare cases tea tree oil can cause allergy, and if you find signs of rash or redness of skin, stop using tea tree oil.
How Does Tea Tree Oil Reduce Acne?
Tea tree oil has anti-microbial properties. It can kill the P. acnes bacteria which is responsible for acne. As the bacteria is destroyed, the acne can clear up gradually. Tea tree oil has a similar effect to that of benzoyl peroxide for acne treatment. Tea tree oil also does not have the side-effects which are common in acne treatment products.
Apply Tea Tree Oil for Acne Treatment:
Tea tree oil has a strong effect on the skin and it should not be applied in its undiluted form. If the tea tree oil is undiluted, it can result in redness, skin irritation, and blistering.
For topical application, mix 5% of pure tea tree oil with 95% of water. You can also mix 9 parts of water with 1 part of tea tree oil. Before applying this solution, wash your face with water and pat it dry. Now, use a cotton ball to apply the solution onto the skin.
Tea tree oil is an effective and safe treatment for acne. Use it for smooth and acne-free skin.
