Colloidal silver has been used as folk medicine for acne. It was also used as a medicine in the early 1900s. Colloidal silver contains anti-microbial properties and hence, it was used for acne treatment. However, it was found that colloidal silver can accumulate in the vital organs and cause discoloration of skin.

Colloidal silver is the silver suspended in the water. Silver is supposed to contain microbial properties. Hence, applying it topical application or oral administration was thought to destroy bacteria present on the skin. However, scientific evidence does not show that colloidal silver reduces acne.

The Harmful Effects of Colloidal Silver:
Colloidal silver is supposed to be taken in low amounts – about 50 mcg every day. However, increase in the dosage or inability of the body to excrete the silver can lead to its accumulation in the body. It was found that colloidal silver particles can be deposited on the muscle, kidney, skin, liver and spleen. This can lead to discoloration of the skin – which initially appears on the gums. If the other areas of the body are exposed to the sun, the skin can also become discolored.

This discoloration of the skin is also known as argyria. In this condition the skin turns bluish gray. Excessive accumulation of colloidal silver was also found to result in neurological disorders. Also, pregnant women taking colloidal silver can give birth to babies with abnormalities of the ear, neck or the face.

Colloidal silver for acne does not work and it can be extremely harmful. Hence, it is important to avoid all forms of this product for acne treatment.
