The Iodine – Acne Link

Iodine is a trace mineral which is used by our body to regulate the thyroid hormone. It also helps in our normal growth and development and performs several other functions in the body. However, excessive iodine can aggravate acne. For this, consuming right amount of iodine is recommended. However, one should not eliminate iodine, as lack of iodine can lead to goiter, growth problems, and mental problems.

How Does Iodine Aggravate Acne?
Iodine does not cause acne, but it worsens the already existing acne. When you consume excess iodine in your diet, the iodine is released through the skin pores. This irritates the skin pores and the acne is worsened. Sometimes, the iodine can be trapped in the excessive sebum and make the acne worse.

Dairy Products and Acne:
Dairy products have been linked with acne outbreaks. Experts feel that as dairy products contain high amount of iodine, iodine might be the reason behind acne worsening. Cows are fed iodine-fortified feed to ward off infections. The equipment used in the dairy industry also are sanitized by iodine. This is the reason dairy products are high in iodine, which may be the reason behind acne aggravation.

Iodine Sources:
Iodine should be taken in proper quantities in one’s diet. However, excessive iodine should be avoided. Here are the products which contain iodine:

Iodine may not play a major role in acne worsening. However, it would be helpful to cut down excessive iodine intake. It is very important to remember that one should have proper amount of iodine and should not cut it down drastically, as it plays an important role in our body functioning.
