There are very few or none who do not crave to delve one’s tongue into rich chocolate. Those who don’t, we just label them diabetic or simply ‘crazy’. So, is it true that chocolates cause acne? The truth is that it doesn’t really act as a direct cause for acne. In other words, the chocolate-acne story is a myth.
According to Australian Dr. Karl Kruszelnick, one reason for the chocolate-acne myth is the rumored connection between the high-fat content of chocolate and the fatty oil called sebum. Sebum blocks skin ducts and causes acne, or “zits” if you want to get clinical. However, in reality, sebum has nothing at all to do with chocolate.
Acne starts when the sebum oil gets trapped beneath the skin, this can be caused from various reasons such as an overproduction of the oil causing the follicle to block up, dead cells that have not been cleared up properly or the pore might be blocked from the top of the skin. So chocolate cannot cause acne on its own but a bad diet can however cause acne.
If however, upon eating something there is an outbreak of zits the next day, it is advisable to stay away from that food for a while. Much research suggests that foods do not cause acne, but it has not been proven as fact. If on eating the same food again after a few days the result is an outbreak, the chances are it is an allergic reaction rather than an outbreak of acne.
Recent scientific studies have suggested chocolate boosts the serotonin in the brain that produces a calming effect and stability. Stress has been identified as a cause of acne. If chocolate stimulates the serotonin and calms the nerves, then chocolate could ironically be found to assist in acne restraint.
