When a teenager tends to suffer from sever acne, he/she finds it very difficult to cope with peer pressure and may end up doing just anything to get into the social group. It is at this age that acceptance is of most importance to a teenager, and when the child feels ugly he/she may go into a shell and suffer from depression.

It would be good if parents take note of their child’s condition and resort to immediate treatment from a certified dermatologist. Also educating oneself about the various forms of severe acne would do a parent, world’s good.

The four forms of Severe Acne are

1) Acne Conglobata : This is the most severe form of acne, which forms deep scars. It is most commonly found in males and it mostly appears on the face, back, chest, buttocks, upper arms and thighs. It is basically an interconnection of two or three lesions (infected patch of skin) and widespread blackheads. It tends to affect males from the age group of 18-30.

Treatment: This type is difficult to heal, but with the help of a certified dermatologist and with regular and a number of treatment sessions, this condition can be healed.

Isotretinoin  is another form of medical treatment administered to treat this type of acne.

2) Acne Fulminans:  This condition is similar to acne conglobata but is accompanied by fever and severe joint aches especially in the hips and knees. It causes extreme scarring also.

Treatment:  Isotretinoin treatment is administered to treat this condition. Oral steroids are prescribed to treat the inflammation.

3) Nodulocystic Acne: These acne as the name suggests are in the form of nodular cysts. These cysts like structures are filled with thick, pus like fluid, which should be drained surgically “ONLY”.

Treatment: Isotretinoin and oral steroids that help reduce the size of cysts can treat this form, draining the cyst surgically also helps.

4) Gram-negative folliculitis : The reason this form of acne is called Gram- Negative is because “Gram” refers to a blue ink which makes certain bacteria microscopically visual and those bacteria which cannot be viewed are called “Gram Negative”.

In this condition there is appearance of severe acne on the face that occurs due to prolonged antibiotic treatment.

Treatment: The bacteria Gram Negative Folliculitis in such a condition proves to be very ineffective to any forms of treatment. However, to reduce the severity of the issue antibiotics and Isotretinoin treatment are given.

People suffering from sever forms of acne should understand that treatments may fail at times. Healing may also take a period of time to happen. Do not be dismayed. Perseverance, Persistence and Patience will help one sail through this phase and help you get a clear skin over a period of time.
