A study conducted by the Stanford University School of Medicine in 2002 says that stress can worsen or trigger acne. The researchers, led by Dr Alexa Kimball from Stanford University, studied 22 university students with varying degrees of acne.
Stress causes worsening of acne in two ways. First, by stimulating adrenal glands to produce more amount of hormones and secondly, by slowing down the healing process. Stimulating of adrenal glands influences the secretion of sebum, which ultimately results in the formation of acne.
It has been also reported that psychological stress can decrease the capacity of immune system up to 40% to heal acne.
