Acne is usually considered as affecting only teenagers. But this is not the case always. Acne attack among children and adults are not unusual. However, the reasons for adults and children getting acne are different from those of teenage acne.
Adult acne
One in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 suffer from adult acne. It can be difficult to cope with no matter your age, and can cause depression and social anxiety in an adult the same way it can in a teen. There are a variety of reasons causing adult acne. Some of them are stress, bad cosmetics, hormones and birth control pills. Stress causes your oil glands to overcompensate. Bad cosmetics lead to bacteria-laden pores. Hormones cause the sebaceous glands to overact and birth control pills with androgen in them can cause breakouts.
Androgens (male hormones found in both men and women and important in causing teenage acne) are also at work in adult acne. For instance, during menopause as the body curtails the production of estrogen, androgens cause an increased output of sebum by the sebaceous glands.
Treatment
Acne among adults requires almost the same treatment as teenage acne. The most common remedies for basic acne are salicylic acid which unclogs pores and benazoyl peroxide. For more severe acne, retinoids, antibiotics , azelaic acid and birth control pills. You should only use non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic (oil free products that will not clog your pores) cosmetics, moisturizers and sunscreens. Acute cases can be also healed through laser treatments which is a costlier option.
