There has been a long debate about stress and acne. Still now no studies proved a direct relationship between stress and acne i.e. ‘whether stress causes acne?’ A study conducted by the Stanford University School of Medicine in 2002 says that stress can worsen or trigger acne.
The researchers, led by Dr Alexa Kimball from Stanford University, studied 22 university students with varying degrees of acne.
Results of the study:
- The study showed that college students with acne were more vulnerable to worsening of their acne during examination periods. It proved that exam stress worsens acne in the students.
- It showed a severity of acne before, approximately one month before an examination and during an exam period.
- The study also showed severity of acne according to the difficulty of particular subjects.
- Writing in the journal Archives of Dermatology, the researchers say the finding does not prove that stress directly causes acne.
How stress can trigger acne?
- Stress causes worsening of acne in two ways. First, by stimulating adrenal glands to produce more amount of hormones and secondly, by slowing down the healing process. Stimulating of adrenal glands influences the secretion of sebum, which ultimately results in the formation of acne.
- It has been also reported that psychological stress can decrease the capacity of immune system upto 40% to heal acne.
